  If I could give a zero I would. Braeside believe that leaving a first year RN in charge of a ward overnight is appropriate, as if a newly registered nurse would have the skills and experience needed to properly care for the sick and elderly. Our grandmother was admitted so she could be monitored on new pain medication. It was with every intention for her to come out of braeside in a few days. Not only was she not monitored as observations are only taken once a day (which we weren't made aware of), she was agitated and calling out for 5 hours in pain during the night. In that time they pumped her with a concoction of new drugs in high amounts without taking any observations. Family were not called and she passed away alone. The staff had the nerve to tell us that she passed away peacefully and there was no time for family to be called as it was so sudden. It was only after demanding to see the notes recorded from the night that we learned the truth. They had 5 hours to call us as she was showing multiple signs of end of life and they did not pick up on it. Since this horrible experience, we have been in contact with others who have had family members in Braeside. We are not the only family to have a loved one admitted and to have passed away alone without any phone calls. If you want to be able to spend time with your loved ones in their last waking moments, avoid heartbreak and do not send them here. Because of the negligence of staff, we will forever be filled with the guilt of taking our grandmother to that place. What we thought was the best decision for her and her health, turned out to be the worst decision we ever made.
